     1416 Woolhope Lease

Lease to John APPURLEY of Woolhope and others, 1416AD

"Let all men present and future know that we, Richard Mile de Jardeyns of the parish of Newent, Walter Henneberuwe of Cadyton and Robert Bawles of Newent, have given, granted and by this our present charter confirmed to Sir John Walle, Philip Bowley, Richard Harryes, John Huyes, chaplains, William Brugge the son of James [ perhaps Jacob?] Brugge, John Appurley, John de la Byrche of Much Marcle, Henry de Falley and John Hyde of Kynwarston,

All our lands and tenements, with meadows, rights of pasture, pastures, woods, groves, dikes, ditches, rents, services, reversions, dove-cots, and with all and singular the other appurtenances belonging to them in any way whatsoever, in the lordships of ...obiehope*, Putteley and Pykesley which were once of Agnes Brayne, the daughter and heiress of Isabel Brayne,

Having and holding all the aforesaid lands and tenements, with the meadows, rights of pasture, pastures, woods, groves, dikes, ditches, rents, services, reversions, dove-cots, and with all and singular the other appurtenances belonging to the aforesaid lands and tenements in any way whatsoever, to the aforesaid John Walle, Philip Bowley, Robert Harryes, John Huyes, chaplains, William [sic], John Appurley, John de la Byrche, Henry [sic] and John Hyde, their heirs and assigns at the term of sixty years next coming after the date of this charter,

[holding] of the chief lords of those fiefs for the services owed therefrom and by right accustomed, freely, quietly, well, rightly and in peace, forever, during the abovesaid term,

And we, the aforesaid Richard Myle [sic], Walter and Robert, and our heirs, will truly warrant and defend all the aforesaid lands and tenements, with the meadows, rights of pasture, pastures, woods, groves, dikes, ditches, rents, services, reversions, dove-cots, and with all and singular the other appurtenances belonging to the aforesaid lands and tenements in any way whatsoever, for the afore-named period and in the form aforesaid ["to the aforesaid John Walle and the others" omitted] against all men,

In witness of which thing, we have affixed our seals to this present charter, these being witnesses,

John Huyes,

Stephen Hw...ynnes,

John Bollokkes [sic],

Richard Nevell,

Richard Bowley,

John Robyns,

John Webbe de la [English: "fen ende"],

and many others [not named]

Given at Much Marcle on Sunday the feast of Saint Benedict in the fourth year of the reign of King Henry, the fifth after the Conquest of England."

Note 1:  The date is wrong.  The clerk probably meant to write "on Sunday the morrow of the feast of St Benedict."  Both 21 March 1416 and 11 July 1416 were Saturdays, so either would fit with this.

Note 2: The title 'Sir' is used at this time for both knights and clergymen. Putteley = Putley (between Ashperton and Much Marcle), Pykesley = Pixley, Cadyton = Coddington?, Kynwarston = Kingstone?

Note 3: *(Woolhope)
