James Apperley of Ashperton and his descendants

Please note that there will be errors that I am unaware of at present.  Treat the information with caution.

First Generation

Thomas? Apperley .  (Thomas Apperley is recorded on the 1665 Hearth Tax List for Ashperton, holding a household with one hearth.) We believe he or a descendant had at least three children:

  • ? James Apperley .
  • ?Thomas Apperley  died/was buried 16 August 1727 Ashperton.
  • ?Margery Apperley married John Williams in Ashperton on 10 May 1680.

Second Generation

James Apperley of Ashperton married Joan Collins of Ashperton on 31 July 1690 at Stretton Grandison. They had the following children:

  • James Apperley was baptised 11 April 1699 in Ashperton, son of James=Joan.
  • Elizabeth Apperley was born in 1694 in Ashperton / Bosbury. She was  baptised on 14 March 1694/1695 in Ashperton,  daughter of James=Joan.
  • Anne Apperley was born in 1691 in Ashperton. She was baptised on 4 November 1691 in Ashperton,  daughter of James=Joan.  Anne married William Stone on 13 Feb 1725/6 in Ashperton. William died in 1731.
  • Sarah Apperley was born in 1704 in Ashperton. She was baptised on 28 May 1704 in Ashperton, daughter of James=Joan. She died in 1705 in Ashperton. She was buried on 24 March 1705 in Ashperton.

Thomas died/was buried 16 August 1727 Ashperton.  He was married to Mary.  They had children:

  • Mary Apperley baptised 17 Nov 1688 Ashperton
  • Elizabeth Apperley who was  baptised on 29 May 1694 Ashperton
  • Thomas Apperley, baptised 5 January 1692 Ashperton

Third Generation

James Apperley was baptised on 11 April 1699 in Ashperton . He died in September 1727 in Ashperton. He was a stonemason.  James may have married Joan, no marriages details found yet. Joan was born in 1699. She was buried in 1736 in Ashperton. They had a son:

  • James Apperley was born by 1727/8?. He died/was buried 25 July 1784 Ashperton without making a will. He lived in former home of his mother when a widow; highway at east of property and Corkett Lane on the west - half an acre of land in Ashperton.  3 cottages, 6 gardens, 3 orchards, divided into 2 tenements by 1784; believed to be what is now Blacklands Farm.

Fourth Generation

James Apperley was born by 1727(?) in Ashperton. He died intestate in 1784 in Ashperton.   We believe James married (1) ?Mary (2) Elizabeth  Dalley (?James) The surnames have not been verified because of conflicting documents found by the Apperley family. They had the following children:

  • John Apperley was baptised  29 Jan 1748 in Ashperton, son of James=Mary.  As Thomas is later decsribed as the 'only son' of James, we believe John may have died young.
  • Thomas Apperley was baptised 10 February 1754 Ashperton, son of James=Elizabeth.  He died in 1810 'late of Cradley' and left a will.
  • Elizabeth Apperley was baptised on 16 January 1752 in Ashperton / Bosbury, daughter of James=Elizabeth.
  • Mary Apperley was born in 1756 in Ashperton / Bosbury. She was baptised on 29 August 1756 in Ashperton / Bosbury, daughter of James=Elizabeth.

Fifth Generation

Thomas Apperley was born 1754 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 10 February 1754 in Ashperton  He died in 1810.  Like so many Apperleys, Thomas was a cider maker and a stonemason.  His will describes him as 'late of Cradley'. Thomas married Hannah Davis on 23 July 1776 in Bosbury. Hannah was born about 1755. She died on 19 March 1823 in Ashperton.

"HEREFORDSHIRE

TO be SOLD by AUCTION, at the Red Lion, at Stifford's Bridge, in the parish of Cradley, on Wednesday the 31st day of March next, between the hours of three and six of the clock in the afternoon, subject to such conditions of sale as shall be then produced.
A very eligible little Freehold Farm, on the road leading from Stifford's Bridge to Bosbury, in the parish of Cradley aforesaid, late the property of Mr. Thomas Apperley, stone mason; comprising a neat built house, cyder-mill, work-shop, two new built cottages and gardens, five acres of excellent hopground, two acres of arable and five acres of rich pasture land, the whole lying in a ring fence, (except the arable land, which is only parted by the road,) and well worth Twenty-five Pounds a year. The tenant will shew the premises, and for further particulars apply to Mr. Homes, of Hamish Froome; or to Mr. Thomas Price, attorney at law, in Worcester; or to him, on Monday's, at the King's Arms, in Bromyard."
 

They had the following children:

  • Elizabeth Apperley was born in 1781 and baptised in Bosbury.  In 1809 in Ashperton she married James Sheriff and they had at least 2 children, Edward Sheriff b 9 December 1810 Ashperton and Hannah Sheriff b 7 October 1813 Ashperton.
  • Hannah Apperley was baptised on 18 May 1783 in Bosbury. Hannah married John Spencer on 22 October 1807 in Ashperton. Marriage witnesses: Mary Baggot and Thomas Apperley.  Hannah and John Spencer, mason, appear in the 1841 Tarrington census. He was born bc1790, and was dead by 1851.  They had at least two sons, Thomas bc1816, shoemaker, and James bc1818, mason.  In 1841 they were living on Durlow Common, Tarrington and Hannah, mason's widow, pauper,  was living with Sarah Adams, widowed washerwoman at Yatt, Tarrington in 1851.
  • Ann Apperley was born in 1785. She was baptised on 16 February 1785 in Cradley.
  • Thomas Apperley was born on 17 December 1795.  He was baptised 27 December 1795 Ashperton. He died on 2 January 1872.

Sixth Generation

Thomas Apperley was born on 17 December 1795 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 27 December 1795 in Ashperton. He died on 2 January 1872 in Ashperton. The cause of death was sudden death from syncope (shock).  He was the parish clerk and a stonemason.  His gravestone still stands near the gate of Ashperton churchyard.

 

Ashperton Church, Herefordshire

Thomas married Amelia Baggot(t) on 17 July 1823 in Ashperton. Amelia was born about 1800 in Bosbury. She died on 6 June 1877 in Ashperton . (Ann Phelps,  her daughter, was present at her death.) She was buried in 1877 in Ashperton churchyard.

[In 1841 Thomas, stonemason, and Amelia were living in Ashperton with their children: Robert, Amelia, Hannah, Thomas and Ann.

In 1851  Thomas, mason/journeyman, and Amelia were living on Ashperton Road with their children: Robert, mason's labourer, Amelia and Hannah.

In 1861 Thomas and Amelia were living in a cottage on Ashperton Road with lodgers, a boarder and their granddaughter Ann Phelps b1850 St James, Gloucester

In 1871  Thomas and Amelia were living between Haywood Lane and Ashperton & Canon Froome School]

Thomas and Amelia had the following children:

  • Robert Apperley was born in 1835 in Ashperton. He died on 21 May 1905 in Selly Oak workhouse. He was a stonemason.
  • Charles Apperley was born on 27 February 1843 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 12 Mar 1843 in Ashperton. He died on 20 March 1843 in Ashperton at home. The cause of death was convulsion fits.
  • Amelia Apperley was born on 10 January 1840 in Ashperton. She was baptised on 16 February 1840 in Ashperton. She died on 20 August 1910 at 16 Roman Road, Cheltenham, attended by great niece, Amy Ellen Pope.  Amelia was buried 23 August in grave A1-176 at Cheltenham Cemetery.  She was a domestic servant at Moreton House, 14 Oxford Place, Cheltenham and later a lodging house keeper at 17 Albert Place, Cheltenham, and, at death, she was described as a confectioner.
  • James Apperley was born in 1832 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 6 May 1833 in Ashperton. He died on 16 May 1833 in Ashperton.
  • Hannah Apperley was born in 1829. She was baptised on 13 December 1829 in Ashperton. At Longdon Parish Church on 10 Apr 1853 (reg B1853 Upton), Hannah married John Dancock, bc1832, Longdon, labourer /husbandman, d reg C1914 Upton, son of George Dancock labourer; marriage witnesses: George Dancock and Sarah Hodges. Hannah and John had Fanny born 27 Apr 1853 Longdon's Heath, Upton and Severn.  She married William Thomas Pope, farm lab.  Their daughter Amy Ellen Pope was born 22 Jul 1877 Heath, Upton on Severn.  In 1881 Amy was with her grandparents Hannah and John Dancock.  In 1891 and 1901 and at aunt's death in 1910 she was with her great aunt Amelia in Cheltenham, at 50 Leighton Road, St John's, Cheltenham ; 17 Albert Place, Cheltenham and 16 Roman Road, Cheltenham.
  • Thomas Apperley was born in 1826 in Ashperton. More details in next section.
  • Ann(e) Apperley was born in 1824 in Ashperton. She married Richard Phelps, a cooper, son of Joseph in St Mary's Chapel, Gloucester, on 25 September 1849.  Their daughter, Ann Phelps, was born in 1850. In 1861 Ann was with her grandparents, Thomas and Amelia, in a cottage on Ashperton Road, Ashperton.

Seventh Generation

Robert Apperley was born in 1834/1835 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 4 January 1835 in Ashperton.  He died on 21 May 1905 in  Selly Oak Workhouse, Birmingham. The cause of death was acute bronchitis, cardiac failure. His son Arthur Charles was in attendance at his death and was living at that time at 15 Poplars Fallows Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham.  Robert married Ann Abigail Mallett on 27 Jul 1856 in Ashperton (registered  September Quarter 1856 Ledbury.) His witnesses were Thomas Apperley and Mary Brazier. Ann was born about 1835 in Hereford. In 1901 Robert and Ann were living at 2 Edward Place, Edward Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham.  She died 2 Apr 1905 in Selly Oak Workhouse Infirmary, Birmingham.  Cause of death was morbis cordis anasarea.  Her husband was recorded as a stonemason of Balsall Heath on her death certificate.

[In 1841, Robert lived with his parents Thomas=Amelia and siblings Thomas, Hannah and Amelia in Ashperton.

In 1851, Robert lived with his parents, Thomas, mason/journeyman, = Amelia and his sisters, Amelia and Hannah, on Ashperton Road.

In 1861, Robert and wife Ann Abigail were living with her son Francis Mallet(t) and their son Charles at Black Lands Gate, Ashperton Road.  Robert was a stonemason and gatekeeper, presumably  to Blacklands Farm. 

In 1881,  Robert, a stonemason, and his family had moved to Birmingham.  He, Ann Abigail and sons James, a labourer, and Robert lived at 19 Norton Street, Balsall Heath.

In 1901, Robert and Ann Abigail were living alone at 2 Edward Place, Edward Road, Balsall Heath.  Robert was still working as a stonemason]

Details of the family:

  • Arthur Charles Apperley was born on 14 September 1857. He died on 4 March 1934.
  • Francis Mallet son of Ann Mallet was baptized 10 May 1853 Burghill.
    (Francis Lucas Mallett ‘s birth was registered March Quarter 1853 Hereford)  He is shown as 'son-in-law' living with Robert Apperley in 1861.
    Francis Lucas Malett 24 Jan 1876 Colwall (registered March Quarter 1876 Ledbury)= Annie Handley
    In 1881, Francis Mallett bc1851 was a gardener in Colwall area, living with wife Annie aged 26 b Colwall, laundress, and daughter Elsie F.S. aged 4 b Colwall.  In 1891, Elsie Mallett bc1877 was a servant in a household in Stone Staffordshire.
    By 1901, Francis was dead and his widow, Annie Mallett, was a laundress/seamstress b Colwall, who is living in 5-roomed 4 Jubilee Cottage in Llanfairfechan, Caernarvonshire, Wales.  With her were 2 daughters: Elsie Francis 23 b Colwall, a laundrymaid, and Hilda Annie 17 b Colwall. (Hilda Annie Malett b reg March Quarter 1884 Ledbury.)
     
  • James (Richard) Apperley was born on 21 May 1861 at Blacklands Gate, Ashperton. He was baptised on 15 June 1861 in Ashperton. On his birth certificate, his father is described as a stonemason journeyman.  At 20 he lived with his parents at 19 Norton Street, King's Norton. When he married he was described as a bachelor, labourer, son of Robert Apperley, stonemason.  He married on 10 Feb 1884 (reg March Quarter 1884 Kings Norton) at  St Paul's Church, Balsall Heath.  His bride was Mary Chatterley, bc1861, spinster of Balsall Heath, daughter of Henry Chatterley, gunstocker. Witnesses were William and Elizabeth Nicholls.  Their son, Arthur Thomas Apperley, was born in 1884, his birth reg June Quarter 1884 King's Norton.  In 1886 the family sailed to Australia on the Aberdeen, arriving 13 April 1886.  James died 2nd June,1936 at Marrickville New South Wales and Mary died in 1936.  Arthur Thomas was a carpenter and lived at 30 Allen Avenue, Belmore with Florence Annie and Ethel Lillian, a machinist, in 1930.  By 1936, Ethel was no longer living there, but Mary Apperley was there. In 1930, at the same address were Alwyn Alfred Apperley, a labourer, and Doris Apperley, but by 1936 they had moved to 5 Percy Street, Haberfield, NSW. Arthur Thomas died in 1969 at Campsie, New South Wales.
  • Thomas Apperley was born on 22 February 1864 in Ashperton. He was baptised in February 1864 in Ashperton. On his birth certificate, his father is described as a stonemason journeyman. He died in 1864 in Ashperton.
  • Alice Anne Apperley was born on 27 October 1862 in Ashperton / Ledbury. She was baptised on 30 November 1862 in Ashperton / Ledbury. On her birth certificate, her father is described as a stonemason (master).  She worked as a servant at Dorset Villa in Cheltenham. She moved to Australia and in Bunderberg, Queensland and on 15 December 1883 she married William Shakespeare Grew, house painter, b reg June Q 1863 Kings Norton, died 1931 aged 68 years, son of Henry Grew, painter/signpainter/shopkeeper/paperhanger bap 10 June 1827 Hanbury, (son of Samuel Grew=Mary)=Dec Q 1846 West Bromwich Mary.   In 1881, William was living with his family at 22 Pleasant Terrace, Mary Street, Balsall Heath. Having moved to Sydney, they lived in the Blue Mountains area and had 5 children: William James b1885, Alice Mary b1889, Charles b1890, Lily b 29 Aug 1891 and Elsie Mabel b1902.  William James Grew, painter, married Elsie May Watson in 1914 in Sydney.  They had 3 children Lionel James Grew, Alan William Shakespeare Grew and Joyce Grew (later Croker).  They lived in Bathurst Road, Blackheath in 1930.
    Alice Ann Grew nee Apperley died in 3 Oct 1924 of a diabetic coma.  She and her husband are buried at Blackheath Cemetery, in the Blue Mountains in New South Wales Australia.

  • Robert Apperley was born on 28 June 1869 in The Whych, Great Malvern, Worcestershire. He was baptised in 1870 in Malvern, Worcestershire. On his birth certificate, his father is described as a stonemason.  He died 12 Nov 1910 reg Dec Q 1910 Birmingham, following an accidental fall from a roof, when he fractured arms, thigh and ribs with other injuries, established at inquest 16 Nov 1910.  His address at death was 22 Islington Terrace, Wenmon St, Kings Norton.

At marriage, he was a bachelor, house painter of 177 Edwardes Street, Balsall Heath, son of Robert, stonemason.

24 Jul 1897 St Ann's RC Church, Alcester St, Aston (reg C1897 Aston)=Alice Driver bc 1870 Balsall Heath, reg Dec 1871 Kings Norton,  ref 2/1( at = age given as 26,) spinster, of back 89 Cox St, Balsall Heath, daughter of Henry Driver, iron plate worker.  Witnesses: Thomas Dowell and Florence Aymes. After Robert's death she married Walter Ernest Lancaster, a labourer.  Alice died of cardiac failure at Selly Oak Hospital on 18 Feb 1958. 

In 1899, Robert and Alice's address was Moor Green Lane, Moseley, Kings Norton and they were living at Billesley Common in 1901. 

Their children were:

  • Hilda May Apperley was born in 2 March1899 (reg June quarter 1899 King's Norton), Moor Green Lane, Moseley, King's Norton, and died in 1995. She was married to someone with the surname Foulkes. Her father was a house painter (journeyman) at her birth. 
  • Herbert Apperley, born 12 Aug 1902, reg December Quarter Kings Norton, d June Quarter 1971 Solihull;
  • Ethel Apperley birth reg March Quarter 1903 Kings Norton;
  • Edith Apperley b December Quarter 1908 Kings Norton, d 5 Feb 1988 Coalburn, who married (1936 Kings Heath) Archibald Potter b1911 Birmingham, d 30 October 1999 Coalburn.

Thomas Apperley was born in 1826 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 23 December 1826 in Ashperton. Thomas married Elizabeth Adelaide Green, daughter of John Green, on 5 December 1852 in Bromyard. Elizabeth was born about 1833 in South Brewham, Somerset. Thomas Apperley's marriage to Elizabeth Green was witnessed by John and Elizabeth James. He and his father were both described as masons at the time of the marriage.

[In 1841,Thomas appears to have worked as an agricultural labourer for Richard Griffiths, farmer, in the Weobley area.

In 1851, Thomas appears to be a police constable in St Margaret's parish, Westminster.  More information is needed here as verification.

In 1861 Thomas, then a stonemason, and Elizabeth were living in Newport Street, Claines, Worcestershire, with Sarah Adelaide, Matilda and lodgers.

In 1871  Thomas, stonemason, and Elizabeth (recorded as Edith b1813 Somerset) were living in Bromsgrove Street, Claines with Matilda, Clara, Albert and Ada.

In 1881 Thomas and Elizabeth were living at 2 Back 203 Conybere Street, Bordesley with son Albert Edward, and grandson William Henry Apperley.]

Thomas appears in a Boston (Mass) Directory in 1882 ‘Thomas A, mason, bds’ (boards) 679 E. Seventh St. He later appears in a Boston (Mass) Directory in 1887/8 as a boarder at 8 Vine St. Worcester, Mass.

We do not know what became of his wife Elizabeth.

They had the following children:

  • Matilda Mary Apperley was born on 21 September 1855 in Ashperton. She was baptised on 25 December 1855 in Ashperton. (Note that the Apperly spelling is used throughout the birth certificate.) Her father's occupation was stated as mason journeyman.  She worked as a domestic servant. 

On 17 May 1877 she gave birth to William Henry APPERLEY in Birmingham, whose birth was registered June Quarter 1877 Birmingham. [William H. Aperly aged 4yrs 6mos 4days of 679 Seventh St died 22 November 1881 in Boston,, cause diptheria, born England *son of Thomas and Elizabeth A., parents born England. *in actual fact their grandson]  She gave her address as 3 Court, Betholom Row, St Thomas's, Birmingham.  In 1881 he was living with his grandparents, Thomas and Elizabeth Apperley at 2 Back 203 Conybere Street, Aston.   Matilda Mary travelled to Boston Massachusetts and worked as an attendant in the Barbour household (1880 US census). 

In Boston, Massachusetts, on 29 Aug 1883, she married John Work of Boston, bc1846 Ireland, collector, (his second marriage), son of Henry and Ellen.  The service was performed by John Wright of Boston.  John and Matilda Wark  were in Philadelphia 1900.  The two children with them are from his first marriage.

  • Thomas Alfred Apperley was born on 14 March 1857 in Ashperton. He was baptised on 30 May 1857 in Ashperton. We believe that his death was registered in 1859 in Worcester.
  • Clara Gertrude Apperley was born at home at 36 Newport Street, Worcester on 18 July 1861. She was baptised on 11 August 1861 in All Saints, Worcester. Her father's occupation was stated as stonemason journeyman. She worked as a servant at Park Hill, King's Norton.

Rail Road Conductor, born 1862 Nova Scotia, parents Henry Porter, postmaster, bc1821 Nova Scotia =Mary Lois Eaton b14 Dec 1824.  First marriage for both.  Clara Gertrude died 1929 buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville, Nova Scotia; Willard died 1935 buried Oak Grove Cemetery, Kentville

  • Ada Georgiana Apperley was born at home on 23 July 1866 at 17 Moor Street,  Worcester. She was baptised on 25 December 1866 in Ashperton / Worcester. Her father's occupation was stated as stonemason. In 1881 she was working as a housemaid (aged 17) for the Barnett family of King’s Norton at Ivythorpe, Wake Green Road, Elmshurst. She may be the Ada G. Apperley of Globe, Arizona who married Benjamin M. Fellows/Follows in Los Angeles on 2 October 1899.
  •  Albert Edward Apperley was born at home on 5 September 1864 in Cypress Place, Claines, Worcs. He was a brass bedstead manufacturer's employee (Cox and Danks, Sparkbrook).  (His birthplace is stated as Droitwich in some records.) His father's profession was stonemason journeyman. 

    In Worcester, Worcester Co., Albert E. Apperley, 23, of Providence RI, stonecutter, born England, son of Thomas and Elizabeth J. Apperley married 22 Dec 1877 Susan A. Tighe, 23, of Worcester MA, b West Boylston MA, dau. of James F. and Catherine Tighe.
    First marriage for both; married by Thomas J. Conaty, Clergyman of Worcester, MA

    1900 census, Providence RI, they live at 114 River Avenue, but the surname appears as Appley:
    Albert E. Appley, b Sep 1864, England; his wife, Susan A., b Feb 1864, MA and their son, Albert E. Jr., b Nov 1894, Washington DC

    In 1910 Albert E. appears in the US census as a stone cutter, at Providence, Rhode Island with  his wife Susan A. b Massachusetts, and his son Albert E. b Massachusetts.   In 1912 Albert E. jnr was working as a draughtsman at River Avenue, Providence.

    Albert Edward died after his son on 17 December 1916 in Rhode Island.  His son, Albert E, a draughtsman, bc 1895 Massachusetts, d 25 March 1916 Rhode Island.

  • Sarah Adelaide Apperley was born on 22 July 1853 in New Road, Bromyard, Hereford, reg September Quarter 1853 Bromyard. Her father's occupation was stated as stonemason. In 1861 she was living with her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth nee Green, sister Matilda and lodgers in Newport Street, Worcester.  Eventually she worked as a barmaid. 

  • According to cousin John Westerdale,  my gt gt aunt Sarah Adelaide  married John's ancestor William Saull in 1874.  In the light of other family evidence, William is probably William Tomkins Saull birth registered December Quarter 1840 in Daventry, Northamptonshire - see The Sole Society for photos of William, his father and siblings). He is believed to have served in the British Army and survived the siege of Cawnpore (Kanpur) in 1857. William's sister died while visiting him in India.)

    At marriage, Sarah was of Waterman's Fields, of age, daughter of Thomas, stone carver. 19 Mar 1874 Woolwich parish church (reg A1874 Woolwich)=William Saull, bachelor, labourer, of age, of Shoeburyness, died by 1910, son of John Saull, cooper; witnesses: CP Forrest and AM Badger.

    Six years after her marriage, she was living with her husband, a publishing house worker, and her family in Boston, Massachusetts.  Her children were: Selina S. Saull bc1875, William E. Saull bc1877 and Ada L. Saull bc1879.  In 1910 Sarah was a widow with 5 children born, 3 living.  She died on the 10 May 1911. The address given in the Philadelphia Inquirer was 2724 Hemberger Street.  Interment was private.

    Selina married Garwood Jaggard and they had Robert Vincent Jaggard whose daughter Norma married Ray Westerdale.

    While William was in Boston, his brother, Vincent Saull, and wife Sarah, were running Dining Room in Philadelphia, and his father John was also there, but profession was given as canvasser. Vincent was shown as being born about 1846 and the father was about 1818.  Vincent is probably the individual whose birth was registered in the December Quarter of 1846 in Daventry, Northamptonshire

Ann(e) Apperley was born about 1824. She was baptised on 2 February 1824 in Ashperton. Ann(e) married Richard Phelps, son of Joseph Phelps, on 25 September 1849 in St Mary's Chapel Gloucester. At time of marriage, Ann lived at Bell Lane, St Mary de Crypt, Gloucester, and Richard lived in Victoria Street, Barton St Michael. The marriage was conducted according to the rites and ceremonies of the Huntingdon Conviction (a Calvinist Methodist sect originated by the 18th century theologian, Selina, Lady Huntingdon). At the 1851 census the family were still living at Victoria Street.  Later they moved to Windmill Terrace Wotton St Mary.  Richard and Ann(e) had the following child:

  • Ann Phelps was born on 30 June 1850 in Barton St Michael Gloucester.

Eighth Generation

Arthur Charles Apperley was born on 13 September 1857 at Blacklands Gate, Ashperton. He was baptised on 8 November 1857 in Ashperton. He died on 4 March 1934 in Bromwall Road, Billesley. The cause of death was Heart Failure, Bronchitis, Diabetes. He was buried in 1934 in Yardley Cemetery, Birmingham.  Although it is believed that some sort of memorial stones were paid for, his grave is unmarked.

He was also known as Charles Arthur. His birth certificate states his father was a mason journeyman.  He was an army pensioner, late of 120 Stoney Lane, Sparkhill at death.  (Earlier at 5 Beech Avenue, Stoney Lane, Sparkhill.)  He died at 10 Bromwall Road, Billesley, attended by son, Robert. At the time, Robert was living at 5 Beech Avenue, Stoney Lane.  He was buried with Letty and Gladys May in Yardley cemetery.  Arthur married Letitia Brittle, "Letty", warehouse worker in a brass bedstead factory, on 29 April 1888 in St Paul's Balsall Heath, Birmingham.[ Letty was the daughter of Edward George Brittle (birth registered March Quarter 1840 Aston), blacksmith, of 42 Sandy Lane, Aston, whose marriage was registered September Quarter 1859 Birmingham to Sarah Elizabeth nee Cott(e)rell aka Cotterill, born 1 December 1835, baptised19 September 1836 St Phillips Birmingham, daughter of Thomas Cottrell, carpeter/joiner, who married Elevina Morgan on 19 February 1827 Edgbaston.  Elevina was born 8 September 1807, bap 24 January 1809 St  Phillips Birmingham, death registered  December Quarter 1867 Birmingham, the daughter of John Morgan=Sarah WIGGETT].  Letitia was born on 20 April 1861 in Henn's Row, Aston Warwickshire. She died on 18 January 1914 in Sparkhill, Birmingham.  In 1901 Charles Arthur and Letty were living at 15 The Poplars, Fallows Road, Aston.  Seven of their children were living with them (Arthur C., Robert, James, Fred, Alice, Walter, Frank).  His profession is given as stonemason.

  • Thomas Howard Apperley was born on 16 March 1899 in Deritend, Birmingham. He died on 15 January 1900 in Deritend, Birmingham. The cause of death was pneumonia. He died at his parents' home: 15 The Poplars, Fallows Road, Aston.

  • Gladys May Apperley was born on 30 November 1902 in Deritend, Birmingham. She died on 29 September 1917 in St Martins Birmingham. The cause of death was otitis media chronica suppurativa; brain abcess. She was buried with her parents in Yardley cemetery.

  • Ernest Edward Apperley was born on 30 June 1906 in Bordesley, Birmingham. He died on 30 December 1912 in St Bartholomew's, Birmingham. The cause of death was scarlet fever (toxic). He died in City Hospital, Yardley Road, with mother, Letty, in attendance.  He was buried in a cemetery plot in Yardley cemetery.

Ninth Generation

Frederick William Apperley was born on 8 January 1894 in Oxygen Place Main St, Aston, Birmingham. He died in September 1978 in Birmingham and his ashes were scatterd in Yardley cemetery. As far as army experience is concerned, he was 3640/201512 Private 3rd/9th Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who transferred to 1st/4th Northamptonshire regiment. He enlisted 12 August 1914 and was discharged 1919. He served in Egypt where he was attached to the Royal Engineers and severely burnt his arms in an accident while cleaning bearings with petrol by candlelight. 

Frederick married Sarah Ann Bumpas, daughter of William Bumpas and Laura nee Wilkinson, on 3 April 1920 in Bordesley, Warwickshire. Sarah was born on 25 August 1892. She died 10th June 1974 and her death was registered in June Quarter 1974 in Birmingham. They had the following children:

Walter Apperley was born on 29 June 1897 in Aston, Birmingham. He worked as a postman.  Towards the end of his life, he was in Astley Nursing Home, Stourport.  He died on Wednesday 7 September 1988 Malvern, cremated at Lodge Hill Crematorium. He was a Royal Army Service Corps Driver who enlisted 14 July 1914 and was discharged 15 Feb 1919. He served in Salonika, Greece, where he contracted malaria and was invalided home. In the Second World War, he served in the Civil Defence.  Walter married Florence Gwendoline Price, daughter of Samuel Price, on 12 September 1925 in Quinton parish church. Florence was born in 1906.

Francis ("Frank") Apperley was born on 20 November 1900. He died in 1974. He was born at 15 The Poplars Fallows Road, Aston, Birmingham.  He was 5095123 Private 1st Royal Warwickshire Regiment and he enlisted 17 February 1919 and was discharged 16 February 1926. He also served in India.  Francis married Florence Jacques ("Floss"), daughter of John William Jacques, on 31 Jul 1926 in Northfield Parish Church.

Arthur Charles "Charlie" Apperley (Arthur Charles, Robert, Thomas, Thomas, James, James, James, Thomas?) was born on 28 June 1889 in Kings Norton, Birmingham. His death was registered in the March Q 1974 in Birmingham. He was born at his parents' home at Albert Place, Sherbourne Road, Balsall Heath.  He was 2596/330548 PRIVATE 1st/6th Royal Warwickshire Regiment and he enlisted 1 September 1914. He was discharged with shell shock 18 August 1917. He had served in France.

Arthur married Gladys Mary Clarke daughter of Frederick Clarke on 9 Aug 1919. Arthur and Gladys had the following children:

Robert Apperley  was born on 27 June 1890 in King's Norton. He died on 5 May 1964. At the time of his marriage, he was living at 311 Golden Hillock Road, Sparkbrook and his wife was living at 5 Park Place, Montgomery Street. Robert's father is described on the certificate as a stonemason. The marriage witnesses were Joseph Parsons and Florence Harrall.  He was 27956/36819 Private 1st Worcestershire Regiment, and he transferred to 8th Royal Berkshire Regiment. He served in France and was wounded.  Robert married Mary Ann Elizabeth Smith ("Lizzie"), daughter of Richard Smith and Hannah Elizabeth Cull, on 28 June 1913 in Christ Church, Sparkbrook, reg June Q 1913 Aston. Mary was born on 26 August 1883 in Holly Lane Erdington, Warwickshire and died in 1963.

  • Mary Elizabeth Apperley  was born on 18 June 1914, reg C1914 Aston. She died on 9 May 1995.
  • Winifred Emily Apperley was born on 5 November 1916. Her death was registered Sept 1992. On 1 September 1934 she married Leslie George Morris b 7 March 1916, death reg April 1987, son of Archibald W. Morris and Dolly Ivy.  They had at least 8 children.
  • Robert Apperley was born on 23 December 1919. He died on 17 December 1985.
  • James Ernest ("Ernie") Apperley was born on 9 December 1922. He died on 30 November 1970.

James Apperley  was born on 8 June 1892 in Kings Norton. He was seriously injured in arm and leg when checking a machine gun post that had fallen silent.  According to a Red Cross report, one of the men, Pte Cullimore,  who tried to rescue him that morning stated that they returned for a stretcher only to find that German soldiers had taken their position.  As a result, Pte Cullimore was taken prisoner and did not know what had happened to James Apperley.  It is believed he died from his wounds on 25 Apr 1918 in Flanders. He was 19507 Sergeant 13th (Pioneer) Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment and he served in Flanders. He has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.  James married Mary "Rose" Ann Taylor daughter of Frederick Taylor on 8 February 1913, reg March Q 1913 Aston. Mary died in 1967. They had the following children:

  • Violet M. Apperley was born in 1914, reg Dec Q 1914 Aston.
  • Arthur Robert Apperley was born in 1916. He died in 2006.

Alice Apperley  was born on 4 September 1895. Alice married George Clarke, son of George Clarke, on 26 December 1918 in St Michael's, Handsworth. They had the following children:

Tenth Generation

Ronald William Apperley married Reinhilde Schmitz, daughter of August Friedrich Wilhelm Schmitz and Paula Sophia Schuetter, in 1948. She died in1995 in Birmingham aged 68. Ron died in 2008.

Mary Elizabeth Apperley was born on 18 June 1914 in Beach Avenue, Stoney Lane, Sparkhill, Birmingham. She died on 9 May 1995 in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. Mary married Henry Ceirog Phillips Jones, "Cei", son of Henry Phillips Jones and Matilda Malson, on 26 December 1941 in Yardley Wood, Warwickshire. Henry was born on 5 Nov 1915 in Bedwelty, Rhymney Valley. He died on 5 January 1997 in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. He was born at his parents' home in Abertysswg, Rhymney. 

Robert Apperley was born on 23 December 1919. He was a driver in the Royal Engineers.  He died 17 December 1985.

James Ernest Apperley "Nipper" was born on 9 December 1922. He died on 30 November 1970.  James married Maureen Brereton. Second marriage: Newton.

Arthur Robert Apperley was born in 1916. He and his wife Beryl died in 2006.
