After change in Asylum management, he moved to Manchester and 1853 was the District Medical Officer and vaccinator to Manchester. Between 1853-1865 he moved 6 times. After his daughter's birth in 1863, he moved to western Australia, leaving family behind. From 1869 he held various government appointment, such as Medical Officer of Greenough and Dongara; house surgeon at Perth. 1866 accompanied T. Hooley on expedition up the Murchison River to collect natural history specimens. During that trip Hooley named a range of hills after his friend (Bompas Hills). William Carpenter BOMPAS, linguist/gardener/artist, educated by Mr. Elliott, articled to solicitors' firm (where brother George worked) in1852 and worked there 5 years; transferred to Ashurst Morris and Co for 2 years until a breakdown forced him to cease work in 1858; confirmed by the Bishop of London at St Mary's, Bryanston Square in 1858;ordained Church of England deacon by Dr. Jackson, Bishop of Lincoln in 1859; appointed curate to Rev H. Owen, rector of Trusthorpe and Sutton-in-the-Marsh where he worked for 2 years. 1862 became curate of New Radford, Nottingham. Curate to Holy Trinity, South Lincolnshire. 1864 curate to Rev H. Oldrid at Alford, LINCS. Volunteer to relieve the Rev. Robert McDonald at Fort Yukon, accepted by the Church Missionary Society, ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Machray. Travelled to the Mackenzie River area of northern Canada - worked as a missionary and priest; later first Anglican bishop of dioceses of Athabasca (1874-1884); Mackenzie River (1884 -1891); Selkirk (1891 - 1905). He was an able linguist who translated many religious works into northern native dialects.
