Herbert Darlison

NOVEMBER 15 1963
HE WAS THE RIGHT AGE AT THE WRONG TIME
Last Sunday morning Britons stood in silence, remembering the dead of two World Wars… remembering especially perhaps those who fell in the first. Every November the Haig poppies, symbolic of those flowers which are still found on the Flanders battle grounds, remind us of the carnage suffered by mankind between the years 1914-1918. Herbert Darlison of 127 Southfields Drive, needs no poppies to remind him. Pottering about in his back garden, among the damp earth and dead leaves of a misty autumn afternoon, his mind can easily wander down the years to other misty autumns, other dead leaves, other damp and chilling soils.
‘FUNNY FOREIGN NAMES’
To places in France and Belgium, places with ‘funny foreign names’, names like Bethune, Fricourt and Arras, Malmaison, Gommecourt and Pozieres… Bapaume, Passchendale and Cambrai: names that are history, places that are indelibly engraved upon the minds of everyone that fought there.
Herbert Darlison remembers alright……Festubert, Hooge, St Quentin, Vimy, Lens….tiny hamlets, rises in the ground, even for possession of which tremendous battles were fought over weeks and months in mud so deep that neither side could move until it froze. But in August 1914, Mr. Darlison was only 19, a pressman in the boot trade, making the most of his bank holiday at Skegness. War was declared and he went straight to the Leicester Magazine to volunteer. Then on to Wigston barracks, where he joined the 9th battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment, a soldier at last, but one without a uniform. The Quartermaster just hadn’t enough khaki issue to go round!
IN THE THICK OF THE BATTLE
After training in England, Mr. Darlison’s battalion went to France in 1915, and it was soon in action. Mr Darlison remembers vividly the scenes around Hill 60 and in Delvilie Wood -“Devil’s Wood we called it”- when the British army launched its offensive on the Somme the following July. As an infantryman, he was in the thick of the fighting, which cost 60,000 British casualties on the first day alone. Herbert Darlison’s name was not on the growing list of dead. Somehow, to this day he doesn’t know how he survived, only to be gassed while acting as a stretcher bearer. But the strain on men’s nerves was terrific, inevitably resulting in a complete breakdown if exhausted troops were not pulled out of the front line. On occasions this was not possible, there being no reserves to throw into the gap.
For Herbert Darlison’s battalion there was no relief, only hunger, and cold, flooded trenches and the overwhelming weariness that sometimes led men to lie down and sleep even as they stumbled across NO MAN’S LAND to the attack. “It was terrible, terrible,” he says today, looking back down 47 years.
When it came, Private Darlison’s collapse was sudden, violent and complete. “I couldn’t control myself; all my muscles were twitching and shuddering and I couldn’t do anything about it. It was the fear and every thing all at once right on top of you.”
LAND FIT FOR HEROES?
He was invalided home to a London hospital, transferred to Ripon and sent back to France again in time for the 1917 offensives. By the time of the final allied assault, at St Quentin in 1918, Herbert Darlison was 23- but he no longer felt like a young man. At 11a.m. on November 11th, his bondage was over. He came home with millions of other prematurely old young men. To a land fit for heroes? “Some heroes,” he says wryly. “There weren’t enough jobs to go round. I worked on the railway. The gas, the electricity, the corporation, and anything I could get.”
After years of insecurity, he got a steady job, retiring not so many years ago after 32 years’ service with the same firm. Now living on his old age pension, he divides his time between the fireside and the garden, sometimes going to the local for a pint and the chance of seeing an old comrade.
His story could have been told by any one of the old gentlemen, who, half a century ago, had the misfortune to be the right age at the wrong time. Millions never had the chance of growing old, but those who were left, like Herbert Darlison, remember them, especially when the season of dead leaves and twilight mists comes round once more.
