The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew

by Robert Bolt

18, 19, 20 February 1976

programme price 2p

Peter Cluer's introduction gave a clear indication of the massive team-effort involved in the production:

'Welcome to another evening of drama at Highwood!  I use the word "another" quite deliberately as this is the fourth production to be staged at the School in the last twelve months - surely a remarkable feat by any standards, let alone those of a school of our size.

Naturally, these ventures could not happen without the willing co-operation and enthusiasm of a large number of people, and "The Thwarting of Baron Bolligrew" is no exception.  Almost half the staff, some sixty pupils and many parents and friends (not to mention wives!) have been involved in the staging of this production and I have been continually amazed and delighted at the unselfish way in which so many people have given up their evenings and weekends to make this show possible.'

The Rebels of Gas Street

by Jan Needle, Vivien Gardner and Stephen Cockett

"There were sporadic school strikes organised by the children themselves.  The most significant of these strikes was the 1911 nation-wide strike staged against corporal punishment.  It was a time of major industrial action all over the country, with thousands of dockers and miners striking and the school children seem to have taken a lead from their fathers.  The school strike seems to have started at Bigyn School, Llanelli, in South Wales, when pupils, incensed by a particularly unfair punishment of one of the boys, decided to take action.  During September 1911, the strike spread to hundreds of schools in sixty major towns and cities throughout Britain.." from A Century of Childhood by Steven Humphries
