Paganhill Maypole Village Hall

Updated 7 August 2011

Paganhill Maypole Village Hall (July 2010) above

with the neighbouring Paganhill Post Office Good Trader

Paganhill Maypole Village Hall was built by landowner George Matthews and builder Ted Wheeler to replace a wooden community hut.  The new hall was opened in 1962.

Has anyone got any photos of the original hut or the hall in its early days?  Please e-mail Rosie with details!

The Village Hall Committee was pleased that their local hall was so useful when the Mathews Way flats had to be evacuated because of a fire.  On 9 June 2010, the evacuated residents came back to the hall to hear an updated report on the state of their homes.

This incident showed how useful a local meeting hall can be in the event of a major local problem.  However, the hall is also intended to be a welcoming focus for community activities.  It is hoped that the improvements that have been made so far, as well as those to come, will be beneficial for all visitors.

Location

The village hall is conveniently attached to the local post office where hall bookings can be made.  A small car park is near the hall.

Details of Charitable Status

It is a registered charity (no 301594) whose objective is to provide amenities for the residents of Paganhill and the local neighbourhood.  The village hall is managed by a committee of management, consisting of the Trustees.  The Trustees only administer the Trust legacy*.  All members of the local community are encouraged to attend the annual general meeting and to stand for election to the Trustees committee.

A Trust legacy of £5,000 was bequeathed to the Hall in the will of the late Mr E J Wheeler and the Hall is entitled to the income arising for as long as it remains in existence.  The Hall is not entitled to any of the capital.

Paganhill Maypole Village Hall AGM:

On the agenda: what has been achieved over the last year and what is planned for the future

The Chair, Martin Kavanagh, talked of all that has been achieved without grant money this year, which includes re-modelling the small toilet to include a hand basin; laying new flooring in that toilet, the corridor, small meeting room and the foyer; creating storage cupboards in the small room; having repairs done on the flat roof and the double hall doors; planting the borders.

Martin also congratulated Craig Johnson on the success of his 2 youth groups and the panto, Snow White and the Seven Aliens, they put on, and on winning the Town Council's Young Person of the Year award.

The Secretary, Sue Sutton,  focused on the grant-funded work, the new toilets, front door, double glazed small windows, water main, tables and chairs, and fascias and guttering. She also mentioned the Biffaward  grant of almost £50,000 to install Solar Photovoltaics, which are now in situ and soon to be commissioned, and to refurbish the kitchen, which is scheduled to start on 22nd August.  Also, she congratulated PSCO Gary Lynch for his Town Council award for endeavour over and above the call of duty.

The Treasurer reported an increase in bookings and therefore income in the last quarter of the year and stated that, although the year ended with a smaller reserve than last year,  much had been achieved so much, as explained by the Chair.

Although the AGM was only attended by a small group of interested individuals (probably because the date clashed with Stroud Show), a group from the local church, who
hire the hall for suppers and other functions, attended.  They joined in the committee's discussion about the kitchen following the meeting. This proved very helpful as they confirmed many of the points had been made.

CHEERS programme

___________________________________________________________

In 2009, the Village Hall Committee launched an appeal:

"We are working hard to try to put the Hall back on the straight and narrow.

Because of the involvement of the Police and Community Support Officers, we were told about a scheme called the Community Cashback Scheme. Recently, a Community Payback team has been doing repair work and general upgrading of the exterior.

The Committee have submitted  the Hall as a project in the hope of receiving some financial help to combat the damage and vandalism which has plagued the Hall."

The nomination period has now closed
