I have been unable to trace John Wells who married Elizabeth Cooper - see first entry.  There is no record of a baptism of John in Southill prior to 1777 and the parish record makes no mention of any other parish. The nearest entry I have found for a John Wells is born to a Joseph Wells and Barbara Brockett.  Thios Joseph's father was Joseph and was granted a settlement certificate from Southill to Shefford in 1734.35.  His son Joseph was granted a settlement certificate from Southill to Potton in 1757 and then turns up in Shefford seeking a settlement certificate for himself, Barbara and children Joseph and John in 1759.  In 1764 Barbara and children are granted a settlement certificate to Hitchin, Herts, and John is said to be about 7 years old (this would make his age at marriage 20).  However there is no record of the family returning from Hertfordshire and no record I can find of them in Hertfordshire records.  There is also a John baptised 30/04/1733 in Campton with Shefford, to Thomas and Sarah, but he died in 1758, and there is a John Wells, linen draper, married to Ann who had a child Ann 09/11/1751 and another Ann on 27/05/1756.  I can find no trace of the death of this wife Ann or the daughters.  This John would be of the right age.  There was also a John Wells, son of Joseph Wells, grocer, and Alice, but he died 04/06/1749.  Also a John Wells, apothecary, who married Mary Milward on 10/04/1730, but he died 26/02/1746 and she died 31/10/1766.  dave.jordanmac.com

Census 1871, address : High Street , Sandy Bedfordshire, blacksmith. Emma died of infected leg ulcers which she had tried to treat herself. Marie Sue Parsons, TEMPSFORD.  I am descended from a John and Martha (Tossel) Wells from Renhold, both born in Tempsford around 1775. I believe that John's father was William and his mother Ann both from Tempsford (both born in the 1750's). John was a blacksmith, as was his father (I believe). One of their seven children was also known as Martha. She married William Elijah Lee (who was from Kimbolton in Huntingdonshire) in Renhold in 1835. They came to the US in the 1860's along with their children, including my ggrandmother Priscilla Jane Lee. (John's grandson, John, was a blacksmith in Renhold too, as well as a publican and a farmer, according to the 1881 census.) Brenda Conrad, ALDERMASTON. James Wells (*1811) married to Elizabeth (*1815), children: Fredia Eliza (*13/07/37), Emily Fannie (*23/09/1839), Isabella Hannah (*09/07/1843). All the children born at Aldermaston, Berkshire  (they may have lived at the Mill House, Aldermaston and they may have been Quaker). Emily and Isabella ran away from home and settled in London “where they opened a coffee house”. Emily had an illegitimate son (John *1863) and in 1878 she married a cousin (second cousin?) John Stevens (*1835, South Stocken, Oxfordshire). In the 1881 census, the three of them are listed in Reading St. Giles: builder and publican. In 1866, Isabella Hannah married William Hunt and had four sons (William *1867, Waller *1870, James *1874, Albert *1876). William is supposed to have died and Isabella then married a widower John Saunders (*1837 Mundford (Thetford), Norfolk--+1892) and they had one daughter Ellen Maud (‘14/04/1884 +29/02/1976). Jon Cole, HAMPSTEAD NORREYS / YATTENDON, I am looking for information on the WELLS family of Hampstead Norris (now Hampstead Norreys) in Berkshire in the 18th century.  My 4x gt grandmother Sarah WELLS was born in Hampstead Norris in 1742 (baptised 29 Dec).  Sarah married Richard HERRIDGE in HN on 19 Oct 1772.  I think that Sarah's father was Thomas WELLS, born around 1709 in HN and that he married Elizabeth MILTON, though I cannot substantiate this.  There are possible links with nearby Yattendon, but this is speculative from IGI data only. jon@cole87.freeserve.co.uk

Marguerite Wells, WALLINGFORD, I am a descendant of John Deane Wells, born Wallingford (Berkshire / Oxfordshire), 1808, whose family tree (entitled Wells of Wallingford) is in the Society of Genealogists' library in London. In 1852, he and his family came to Australia and settled eventually on a property that he named Wallingford Farm. The earliest ancestor so far traced is John Wells who married Susanna West in Wallingford in 1683. 11 December 2002 is the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the Wells family in Australia and we will be having a family reunion on Sunday 15 December 2002. Children in 1871 census: Thomas (18), wine porter, William (13), Harry (10), John James (8). Thomas Wells (b. Wallingford 1852), m 1875 to Mary Jane Pill in South Hinksey, Berkshire (regd. Abingdon).  He was a wine merchants cellarman and moved around in Berkshire and Oxfordshire.  In the 1881 census, Thomas was listed as living at 1 St Aldgate St.,Oxford, with Mary Jane WELLS age 26, b. Eaton Hastings, Berkshire, Maud Eliza WELLS age 5, b. New Hinksey, Berkshire, daughter, Kate E. Celia WELLS age12 months, b. Oxford, daughter, and others. In the 1891, (census) Mary Jane is recorded as follows: Mary Jane was "living at 2 Church Street, New Hinksey, Berks, Parish of South Hinksey, Borough of Oxford. She is listed as: Mary Jane (37) charwoman, and her children: Maud, 15; William, 8: and Rebecca, 7 All born New Hinksey." William was my grandfather and was born Jan 31, 1883. (He) Served with the British 5th Dragoon Guards in the Boer War of South Africa and on the Northwest Frontier of India as a private. Regimental Number 4696. He was invalided home with severe dysentery in May and then discharged in August, 1904. He received the Queen's Medal.

There was some possibility that Thomas was in a hospital in the Oxford area by that time. Not confirmed. I have not been able to find any record of a death, but Mary Jane was married to a William Gee by 1901 and had two children with him. My Great Grandmother was Phoebe Ellen Wells who married Thomas White 1861/62.  Children: Thomas Wells White, christened Feb 1863, St. Peters Liverpool, Robert White, Apr 1865, St. Peters Liverpool, Charles Henry White my Grandfather, born 6th Oct1866 104 Soho St, Everton. Baby Robert died Nov 1866 23months old. Thomas Wells White died March 1909 46yrs. Charles Wells White (son of Thomas Wells) died Nov 1909 at 11months. Margaret White wife of Thomas Wells White died March 1957 79yrs. Thomas husband of Phoebe Ellen, died 24th May 1867 at Hospital Northfield Road North Everton. He was 27yrs. Died of Typhus. Not buried until 20th Sept 1867. Thomas along with his brothers Robert and John had a Drysalting business in Liverpool. Brother Benjamin was the Warehouseman in Everton. Abraham was a Carter in Salford.When Thomas died lettrs of admin. of the personal estate and effects were granted to Phoebe Ellen. On the 28th Feb 1869 Phoebe remarried to John RedmondWidower. Occ. Cabinet Maker of Soho Street. Thomas William Wells, the father of Phoebe attented the marriage his occ. cigar maker.10th April 1869 ( 2 months after the marriage) Pheobe died at the age of 32yrs, at 104 Soho St Everton. The cause of death was Alcoholism and disease of the Liver. Letters of admin. of the personal estate and effects were granted to John Redmond.section 3/1768. Camelford.  She worked at a post office, married Edgar Hylton Wells (b.1898 Clyst Hydon, Devon), son of Fred Wells (born c1868, Wiggaton , Devon- birth reg. at St. Thomas, Devon Co. , Dec. 1898 ) and Annie Beatrice Ponsford; born in Exmouth, Devon ). ANNIE Beatrice PONSFORD- Births Mar 1864 -born in Exmouth , Devon- she married Fred Wells in York - Marriage June 1887.  In the 1891 Census, the census taker in Gloucestershire, noted Fred was born in Wigginton, Yorkshireshire... but he was born in Wiggaton, Devon. He married Annie in Yorkshire, and then lived in Gloucestershire, where their children were born, except Edgar, the youngest, who was born in Devon.

They came to Canada in 1927 with daughter, Evelyn Annie Wells, (age 4), born at Paynters' Cross, Cornwall,  on 05 April, 1923. Dora, Edgar, and Evelyn lived in Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to Halifax, N.S. when he joined the navy in WW2.

Fred Wells shows as WILLIS  in 1871 and 1881 with his parents, William and Elizabeth WILLIS  ; his siblings (births reg. as WILLIS ) are : William b. 1857 ; Walter b. 1862 ; Emma b. 1865 ; Alma Mary b.1870 who married Charles Brewer ;  Ada Jane b. 1873 .   In the 1901 Census he shows as FRED WELLS.

Re the possible ancestry of the William Wells who was buried 3 Feb 1694 DRONFIELD. He married Elizabeth Furnace and had sons named Thomas, Bernard and William.

The birthplace of William and Elizabeth has not been positively established but based on clues from similar family names and wills it could be that they both came from the Eyam  / Calver / Stoke area of Derbyshire.

A WILLIAM WELLES of STOKE HALL, DERBYSHIRE died in 1626. His father was Thomas. Two of his sons were Bernard and William and he mentions an Elizabeth Furnace in his will.

This William was the brother of Bernard Wells, the wealthy lead merchant who leased Stoke Hall from Sir Charles Cavendish in 1608 and was involved in the Cavendish of Bolsover and Welbeck lead smelting enterprises.

By coincidence the Wells of Stoke children were brought up in Calver by Thomas and Elizabeth Froggatt. Elizabeth nee Barker, was the second wife of William Wells of Stoke Hall. Elizabeth probably had family connections to Dronfield and Totley through Barker relatives who were involved in lead smelting.

If there is a connection between the Stoke and Dronfield Wells families it is most likely that William Wells of Dronfield was the great, grandson of William Wells of Stoke Hall by either his oldest son Bernard or his third son Humphrey.

The great, great grandfather of William Wells of Dronfield would have been a Thomas Welles who was born in Gloucestershire but is named as a witness in various Derbyshire documents. Documents of particular interest relate to the Barley family of Barlow, Derbyshire to which Bess of Hardwick was related by her first marriage and from which she received a widows jointure.

John William George Wells b. 1872 along with Albert J. Wells b. 1876 was sent to Canada under the auspices of the Fegans in June 1885. Their father John Wells b.1845 was married 5 Aug 1869 to Mary Randall b. 1850. John Wells had joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2^nd Class on 24 May 1859 and served until 14 May 1873. His death in Southampton in 1883 left wife Mary with the 2 boys mentioned and James R Wells b.1879, Martha Jane Wells b. 1880 and Ada Hannah Wells b. 1883. Mary moved her family to Whitchurch and by 1885 was in Reading where she arranged the emigration of the 2 older boys in 1885. With her death in 1893/94, James R. Wells went to the Fagens from 17 May, 1894 until 9 Dec 1895. I have an unclear trail for the 2 girls. A letter from James to his brother John sometime after Dec 1895 indicates that Martha is living with him but that he has not heard from "Hannie" in a very long time ..... Hannah mentions that Martha is living with James in London in a letter she writes to John on 26 Mar 1899 from St Thomas Home, Basingstoke. A brief contact with one or both of their aunts was made by some of John W.G.s sons during service in Britain during WW2. I am interested of course in learning more about James, Martha and Hannah or any of their relatives. Jenny Patching, STURMINSTER. My great great grandparents were William and Eliza Wells (nee Bland or Jeffs and probably a few other maiden names) William, affectionately known as "Black Billy" was I believe born in Sturminster, Dorset around 1831 and married an Eliza Bland/Jeffs who was born in Sutton, Dorset in 1840. They had at least 8 children, Priscilla, Josiah, William, Mary, Benjamin, Henry, George and Ellen. I am having a lot of trouble sorting out the ancestors for William and Eliza. William's parents are possibly George and Eliza Wells (nee Smith) born in Dorset around 1805. No ideas about Eliza's parentage. Another possibility for William is the one born in Blandford Forum (nr. Sturminster) c. 1831, with parents Thomas and Ann Wells.

(Also interested in Silas and Hannah Lakey (nee Mason), married in Andover in 1841, New Forest gypsies. On this branch I have established most of the children for Silas and Hannah (at least 10) of which my great grandmother Sarah was one. Allyson Lock, My Great Grandfather JOSEPH WILLIAM WELLS was born in DORSET, England abt 1836, son of WILLIAM and SARAH WELLS. He arrived in AUCKLAND, New Zealand on the 29th November 1860.  He was a Blacksmith by trade. JOSEPH WILLIAM WELLS also nominated two brothers and a sister. Brother - HENRY WELLS aged 36, his wife MARY aged 35 and three children, BRIDGET aged 13, WILLIAM aged 6 and JAMES aged 2. They sailed from LONDON, England on 24th of September 1874 on the ship “CLARENCE” which arrived in NAPIER, New Zealand on 5th January 1875. Sister - FANNY aged 18, single, a domestic servant, address Thorncombe Farm, N. Blandford, DORSET, England. Brother - GEORGE WELLS aged 23, his wife ELIZABETH aged 21, and their two children SARAH aged 2 and GEORGE aged 3 months. They sailed on the ship “COUNTESS of KINTORE” from LONDON, England on the 20th of March 1875 arriving in NAPIER, New Zealand on 8th June 1875.

JOE set up a Blacksmith’s shop in Napier but it was destroyed by fire. The family then moved to Hastings where he set up business again. They lived in Evenden Road where he had land for grazing horses for overnight travellers.

JOSEPH WILLIAM WELLS met and married SARAH ELISABETH SCHON (nee BURTON). They had ten children (see below). The family were all born in NZ and lived most of their lives in Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

Doreen North, LAINDON / PITSEA / CANVEY ISLAND. I am trying to find the birth/baptism of James Wells (son of Thomas Wells) - born 1819 at Laindon, Essex.  This is according to the 1851 census when he was living a Pitsea.  He married Mary Anne Pittingale at Hockley in 1841. They appear to have had 6 children, one daughter being Phoebe my grandmother.  The two eldest, James born 1842 and Mary born 1845 appear to have been unknown to my mother. I thought that they might have died young and never mentioned again but I have not been able to find their deaths. Sadly my mother died aged 99 in 1994 before I had started this fascinating hobby. I cannot find the family in either the 1861 or 1871 censuses but I found the four younger children in the 1881 census.The others were Sarah born 1847, Hannah born 1850 and Emma born 1853.  Hannah and Emma did not marry and they both went to Canada as childrens nurses where they died - as far as I know. I would like to make contact with any descendant or any person having knowledge of a descendant of a Barnabe Wells of High Ongar who was possibly baptized in Moreton Parish 8 June 1562. He was the son of John Wells.  He married an Agnus Warner 30 Sept 1612. Barnabe Wells of Highonger's  will was made 12 March 1617 and was proven 12 January 1626 before Master William Please, surrogate of Master Samuel Harvey. Dora Tonkin , d/o Thomas Tonkin and Eveline Jane Haynes (married 1891, reg. Camelford),  born 13 Sept., 1902 in St. Teath, Cornwall, reg. Camelford.  She worked at a post office, married Edgar Hylton Wells (b.1898 Clyst Hydon, Devon), son of Fred Wells (born c1868, Wiggaton , Devon- birth reg. at St. Thomas, Devon Co. , Dec. 1898 ) and Annie Beatrice Ponsford; born in Exmouth, Devon ). ANNIE Beatrice PONSFORD- Births Mar 1864 -born in Exmouth , Devon- she married Fred Wells in York - Marriage June 1887.  In the 1891 Census, the census taker in Gloucestershire, noted Fred was born in Wigginton, Yorkshireshire... but he was born in Wiggaton, Devon. He married Annie in Yorkshire, and then lived in Gloucestershire, where their children were born, except Edgar, the youngest, who was born in Devon.

They came to Canada in 1927 with daughter, Evelyn Annie Wells, (age 4), born at Paynters' Cross, Cornwall,  on 05 April, 1923. Dora, Edgar, and Evelyn lived in Saskatchewan, Canada and moved to Halifax, N.S. when he joined the navy in WW2.

Fred Wells shows as WILLIS  in 1871 and 1881 with his parents, William and Elizabeth WILLIS  ; his siblings (births reg. as WILLIS ) are : William b. 1857 ; Walter b. 1862 ; Emma b. 1865 ; Alma Mary b.1870 who married Charles Brewer ;  Ada Jane b. 1873 .   In the 1901 Census he shows as FRED WELLS.

Edgar's siblings are: Frederick James Wells birth reg. at Dursley, Gloucestershire, Dec. 1889; Leonard Wells birth reg. at Dursley, Gloucestershire, March 1891;  George Aubrey Wells  birth reg. at Dursley, Gloucestershire, June 1893; Annie Margaret Wells birth reg. at Dursley, Gloucestershire, March 1895;

Dora's siblings , all born in St. Teath, Cornwall, are: Thomas Leonard b. 1893; James Donald b. 1893; Leoline Mary b. 1895; Rose b. 1897 who married Earnest Brown & lived in Falmouth,Cornwall Co.,England; Sidney George b.1898 and lived in near Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.;  Margaret (Maggie ) b.1900 who married  'unknown' Carthew & lived in Bodmin,Cornwall ; and  John Barrett b.1905. Stan Cornford, PRESTBURY / BOURTON ON THE WATER. Silas Wells and Jane Wells.

Edward Herbert served in the Royal Navy, mostly in the Caribbean and off the American coast during the Revolutionary war, ending in 1783. Amongst other adventures, he saw off “two Armed Americans” (privateers Holker and Junius Brutus) which were intent on no good towards the island of Tortola, British Virgin Islands.  He received the public thanks of the island.  Served in the following ships:

Centaur (Lieutenant), Centurion, Diana, Dunkirk, Experiment (Master and Commander), Seaford, Yarmouth (Captain).  His marriage at Prestbury Parish Church, Gloucestershire, to Mary Vines on 23 December 1790 was witnessed by Silas Wells and Mary Wells. The celebrant was the Curate of the village of Dumbleton, Thomas Load. 

One Silas Wells married Jane Toms 4 Feb 1738 in Bourton on the Water, but I do not know if they are the two Wellses who were witnesses to the wedding of Edward Herbert and Mary Vines.  Leads from Silas and Jane just might tell us more about the bride and groom, who have many descendants.  meteorologyntlworld.com

Steve Green, HORSLEY, TETBURY and KINGSCOTE. Robert and Hannah Wells and their adult children and their families migrated from Horsley to NEW SOUTH WALES, Australia in 1839. Prior to that they were itinerant carpenters in the Horsley/Tetbury/Kingscote area. Robert Wells was baptised at Horsley on 1st January 1779. He was the son of John and Sarah Wells.  Robert married Hannah Prichett at TETBURY on 19th April 1802. Robert and Hannah, their children and grandchildren migrated to Australia on the "Orestes"which arrived at SYDNEY in November 1839. Sylvie Jenkyn, NEW FOREST, Seeking information about my grand parents, Henry and Dowsha Wells (Romany - Gypsies of the New Forest). Henry and Dowsha were, I think, cousins and so were both Wells. WELLS band of 'gypsy people' who were known to frequent the states of New Jersey and Delaware.  Robert & Amelia Wells had many children including one Richard Wells, b. England, in 1854. Family arrived New York Harbour July 1856. Richard is thought to have died between 1876 and 1880 somewhere in the USA. He was briefly married to Martha William daughter of Tom Williams who came from Devon in England around 1851-53.

Laurine Potter, BRAMSHOTT / PETERSFIELD / GRIGGS GREEN, I was brought up believing that my ancestors were Romany  gypsies.  My late father name was James Benjamin Wells and his father was also named James Wells. at the time of the marriage my father then aged 25 was living in a place called Griggs Green (Just to the west of Liphook on the eastern edge of Woolmer Forest). He married my mother in 1950 in Bramshott, Hamphsire and they stayed in and around that area until 1956 . Jocelyn Bockett, SHALDEN. Samuel WELLS born 1811, (son of Thomas WELLS and Elizabeth Unknown) occupation Cow Keeper, married (12 Oct 1833, Shalden, Hampshire, England) Martha HOLLOWAY, born 1814. Samuel died 9 Dec 1877. Samuel arrived in NZ on the 'Whitby' on 4 November 1841, at the age of 30. Martha: Martha came to New Zealand on the Mary Ann, sailing from England on 24 Sept 1841 under Capt. Bolton. They arrived in Wellington 27 January 1842, and then to Nelson 8 February 1842. Their two sons William (aged 4yr) and John (aged 2yr) travelled with Martha. Len Wells, ISLE OF WIGHT,Samuel Wells whose birth has been accepted as 1788, which is agreeable with the particulars shown on the Ships Indent, his Certificate of Freedom and the List of Persons applying for the Publication of Banns. Although on his death certificate in 1863 the coroner indicated his age was 81, this could not be held very reliable. All references to his place of birth show the Isle of Wight By 1822 Samuel Wells was employed by James Read of  New Sarum as a farm hand. According to a story handed down by Samuel himself, he one day 'borrowed' a horse from his employer to ride to a dance. On returning from the dance he attempted to jump the horse over the gate instead of going through it. As a result the horse was injured, the boss found out and Samuel was later charged with 'horse stealing'. At the Wiltshire Assizes  held 9 March 1822 Samuel was charged that 'on the 24th day of December in the Second year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the fourth, one mare of the price of five pounds of the Goods and Chattels of James Read.....feloniously did steal, take and lead away......'. He was  found guilty of the charge and sentenced to death by hanging. As was customary by this time in England the sentence of death for relatively minor crimes  was commuted to either 7 or 14 years imprisonment. Samuel was reprieved and  the sentence was commuted to 14 years transportation to the colonies Samuel was aboard the Surrey 1 on 5 October 1822 when it set sail from Plymouth for Sydney, Australia. ljwells@bigpond.com http://www.users.bigpond.com/ljwells/

John William George Wells b. 1872 along with Albert J. Wells b. 1876 was sent to Canada under the auspices of the Fegans in June 1885. Their father John Wells b.1845 was married 5 Aug 1869 to Mary Randall b. 1850. John Wells had joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2^nd Class on 24 May 1859 and served until 14 May 1873. His death in Southampton in 1883 left wife Mary with the 2 boys mentioned and James R Wells b.1879, Martha Jane Wells b. 1880 and Ada Hannah Wells b. 1883. Mary moved her family to Whitchurch and by 1885 was in Reading where she arranged the emigration of the 2 older boys in 1885. With her death in 1893/94, James R. Wells went to the Fagens from 17 May, 1894 until 9 Dec 1895. I have an unclear trail for the 2 girls. A letter from James to his brother John sometime after Dec 1895 indicates that Martha is living with him but that he has not heard from "Hannie" in a very long time ..... Hannah mentions that Martha is living with James in London in a letter she writes to John on 26 Mar 1899 from St Thomas Home, Basingstoke. A brief contact with one or both of their aunts was made by some of John W.G.s sons during service in Britain during WW2. I am interested of course in learning more about James, Martha and Hannah or any of their relatives. My Mother in Law was present at his death. Her name was Gladys May Hunt b1920 Northwich Cheshire, d1984.  When my husband was a boy she took him to Finchley Cemetery to a grave that she told him was his fathers. Where did Robert and Denniss originate as I can find no records of them prior to births of the children. The family were mariners, fisherman, and bargeman. There was an influx into Gillingham mainly from the West Country.

Minnie Wells was my great grand-mother. She gave my grandfather away (not formally adopted) but we know she had another son George after moving to London around the turn of the century. Jemima married Christopher Heckles on 17th June 1886 at St.John's Church in Workington Cumberland.Jemima and Christopher had a son Isaac who was born 7th July 1890 (He was my grandfather) I believe that Christopher died young and that Jemimma re-married but cannot find anything else regarding them.

He was chr. 12th October 1817 in Leigh, parents: Thomas and Sarah Wells. Other children include Thomas chr.1812, Sarah chr.1814, John chr.1816. Thomas is probably the one christened 23rd April 1773 Leigh, son of Alaxander (chr. 22 Dec. 1741 Leigh son of Alexander) and Eliza Wells. Alexander's father could be the one chr. 27May 1709 Tonbridge.

with Rhoda BURGESS and I think they had been together for about 5 years.
What had happened to Elizabeth?  I have not found a death.  She may have
reverted to BLUNDEN or taken another name.

3. An ELIZABETH WELLS widow, sempstree (68) born Wormshill, Kent appears in
1881 Census at Paddock Wood (Brenchley Parish) lodger with  Thomas Judd.
What happened to her? - I have been unable to trace a death.  Could she have

Elayne Whatman, SUNDRIDGE, James WELLS married to Charlotte. I presume they remained in England (somewhere). James WELLS born 18.12.1803 at Sundridge, Kent, died 08.10.1881 at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia; married Margaret LEAHY on 29.01.1844 at Pontville, Tasmania, Australia. Margaret was born in 1825/26 at Castleisland, County Kerry, Ireland. James was tried at Central Criminal Court on 15.1.1835 and also sentenced to 7 years transportation. His brother, John Wells, was tried at the Essex Quarter Sessions on 17.2.1835 and sentenced to 7 years transportation. Both sailed to Van Diemen's Land on the 'Bardaster' leaving Portsmouth on 16.9.1835 and arriving VDL 13.1.1836.

I have to presume that James was transported to Van Diemen’s Land after being indicted for, and found guilty of, stealing, on 29.11.1835 1 live tame pheasant, value 3/-, the property of Sarah Jane Atkins

Margaret was reportedly 19 years of age when charged with Larceny in County Kerry, Ireland in 1941 and sentenced to 7 years. On 09.03.1842 was transported to Van Diemen’s Land (now Tasmania) on the sailing vessel ‘Waverley’ arriving 15.12.1842. From the date of the trial until transportation Margaret appears to have been kept in gaol in Kerry. A petition put forward by Margaret’s mother was handed to the Lord Lieutenant and Governor General of Ireland, Philip, Earl de Grey. Margaret’s parents were Teague (?) and Mary LEAHY who lived on Mr. Herbert’s Estate in Castleisland. She had 2 brothers Walter and David and 3 sisters Mary, Ellen, Lucy

One of their sons was Thomas WELLS born 29.1.1844 at Brighton, Tasmania, Australia; died 24.11.1918 at Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. He married Mary Ann GINN on 01.07.1865 at Ballarat, Victoria, Australia. Mary Ann was born 1844 at Lambeth, London; died 23.11.1929 at Fitzroy, Victoria, Australia. Mary Ann’s parents were Frederick GINN and Maria nee HURST. Somewhere along the line Thomas F. WELLS who married May Maria COBURN come into the picture. No other information than this is stated. L. Gerald K. Ridley, MANCHESTER. Nathaniel Richard Wells who settled in Melbourne, Quebec, Canada. Married Asenath Hamel, on Sunday 8th September,1861 in an Anglican Church. On his gravestone it read that he was born in Manchester England on Saturday 12th July, 1834, died in Montreal on Tuesday 3rd January,1905 at the age of 70 years and 5 months. His daughter Mary Asenath Wells is my grandfather Williams Richard Ridley's mother. There were three girls and two boys in the family. It is not known when he came to Canada and with anyone, nor the year or port of arrival. Their fathers names are shown as Joseph Wells (Baker) and Owen Jones (Cordwainer). These names were never used as names for Matilda's children . So I wonder if there were two Matilda Wells at that time period who got married to a Thomas Jones. I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of the family of the James Wells (Weld), College shoe-black and fiddler, who died  12 Feb 1834 in Pinfould Delf  age 62 (Husband of Mary, died 3rd May 1850, age 66). A grandson of James, became a chaplain to the Langdale family for many years. This grandson is probably the Roman Catholic Priest, James Wells born near Whalley , Lancashire, who is listed in the 1881 census as aged 55 and living in Houghton Cottage, Sancton and Houghton, Yorkshire. Eric Wells,  THRUSSINGTON / TUR LANGTON / SADDINGTON / AUSTRALIA. My great grandfather, Alfred Wells, was born about 1850 in Saddington in Leicestershire about 1850, and came to Australia about 20 years later. His grandfather was Charles Wells, who married Frances Sturges in Saddington on the 1st of October,1801. Charles' grandfather was named John and great grandfather was named Matthias and both lived in Tur Langton, Leicestershire,being born in 1708, and 1678 respectively. This we know, fairly certainly. Then Matthias Welles, who married Elizabeth Ward in Tur Langton, was the son of Charles Welles, who married Elizabeth Armstrong in Thrussington on the 5th of November 1694. The Thrussington connection is reasonably sure, although we are a little puzzled why Matthias would move so far, (by the standards of those times) from Thrussington. Then Charles Welles' father was married to Elizabeth (unknown) the children were baptised at Thrussington, and at that stage we have run into a brick wall. ericowencrowl.com.au

William Richmond Wells (master mariner) married Sophia (b.c1824 Hull ) and had Mary Amanda (b.c1856 Barton), Marian (b.c1853 Barton (census) /1852 Glanford Brigg  in BMD) and Gertrude (b.c1862 Barton (census) /1862 Glanford Brigg in BMD). Mary Amanda Wells, had a child Maud Wells (b. 5 June1873, at The Vicarage, Bourine Street, Kingston-upon-Hull ). Maud is my grandmother. She was raised as the daughter of William and Sophia, her grandparents. Mary Amanda Wells married a William John McGee (b.c1852 Antwerp, dock labourer) in Glanford Brigg in 1876. In 1875 a birth is registered in Sculcoates of one William Richmond McG Wells. In 1881 she is living in Hull with her husband and children: William Richmond McGee (age 6) James McGee (age 3) and Olive Gertrude McGee (age 1). francinejuddmsn.com

Carol Metcalf , WILLOUGHBY/CLAXBY BY ALFORD. I am interested in the family of Elizabeth Wells, baptised in Willoughby in 1702, daughter of Thomas Wells and Elizabeth. She married Thomas Parrinder in Claxby by Alford on 3 May 1727, and was buried in Willoughby on 6 Oct 1747. Her children were William, Ann, Martha, and Richard (Parrinder).
