John Ernest Wells, Great Grandfather William Wells was born in Ecclefechan, Parish of Hoddam, Scotland on 19th Feb 1832. His parents were William Wells (b.c1804) & Jeannet nee Bell (b.c1801). William (b. 1832) was married in Australia in 1863 and died in Springsure Queensland 3rd Feb 1895. I have been unable to find when he came to Australia at this stage. James Colin Wells Wells families of LOCHMABEN. I am researching the Wells' surname specifically dwelling in the town of Lochmaben for the period 1790 onwards (and before if records found) and movement into the villages around and wider Dumfriesshire area. My records also contain references to Walls' in Lochmaben around 1790 when the name appears to have changed to Wells. I am happy to share this information and hopefully receive additional new information in return where possible. james.wells@ntlworld.com

Brian Caldwell, TEMPLEPATRICK / PAISLEY / BLANTYRE / GLASGOW / DURHAM. Joshua Wells was born in Templepatrick, Antrim, Ireland in 1785. He served 18 years and 2 months in the 2nd Royal Veteran Battalion, 27th Foot regiment and also with the 8th Royal Veteran Battalion. He was a Quartermaster Sergeant and discharged in 1826 at age 40. The family moved to Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland between 1836 and 1840. Joshua died on March 12, 1862 in Blantyre. (Sources: catalogue.pro.gov.uk (war office records) and his death certificate)
His wife was Elizabeth O'Neill b1806. They had the following in Ireland: William Wells 1829 [He became a grocer in Paisley (by 1881) - wife Ellen (1828)], James Wells 1831. In Blantyre they had: Richard Perry Wells 1841 Susan Wells 1843 Elenor Wells 1846.
Mary Ann Wells 1834. She married William John Caldwell (born 1830) of Antrim in Blantyre July 20, 1850. He was a galvanizing labourer. Their son, one of at least 12 children, William John C. born 1853 of Strathbungo, (Govan) Glasgow was a tinsmith. He died in 1926. His third son was my grandfather, William John C. (1892). Killed in France Oct 17, 1918. Elizabeth Wells 1836
I could only find William Wells in the 1881 census in Scotland. The rest may have moved or died before 1881.
Mary Ann lived until at least 1881 and may have died as late as 1917. However, some of the Caldwells moved to Durham County in the late 1880s and William Caldwell jr. returned to Scotland in 1893. William Caldwell sr. and Mary Ann may have remained in Durham County and died there.
Dates are approximate as they are based on census data.

Carmel Piccolo STAFFORD / TEMPLEPATRICK / PAISLEY / BLANTYRE My grandmother's maiden name was Susan Eleanor Wells - daughter of William Wells (and obviously named after his two youngest sisters, Susan and Eleanor).
William and his brother Richard Perry Wells migrated to New Zealand on a ship called the Lancashire Witch - which docked at Lyttelton (Christchurch) in 1863. William married and had a family in New Zealand (my grandmother was born in Timaru), but at some stage the family moved on to Australia (at one time it was all called New South Wales - which governed NZ, so movement was unrestricted. I don't even know whether they would have been regarded as emigrating to NSW). Richard stayed on in NZ.
The current generation of our family had been unable to find out much about our Great Grandfather William until our Aunty Ella (my father's sister - Susan Eleanor's daughter) left among her "things" a cutting from a (C1915) NZ newspaper, with a coverage on Mr Richard Perry Wells, farmer, of Gapes Valley. In it, he proudly talked about being from Blantyre, and of his father Joshua (as in Brian's entry above ) being in the military. (If you "Google" Gapes Valley New Zealand, you will find a good coverage on Richard, in which his brother William is mentioned). They must have left Blantyre the year after their father died.
My grandmother (William's daughter, Susan Eleanor) died when we were very young, and we never met any of her family - which was widely scattered. She was born at Timaru, in New Zealand. At some stage the family moved to Echuca (in Victoria), where they ran a pub of some kind (Echuca was a big river port for the paddle steamers). They did run foul of the law on several occasions, according to the Echuca Court records.
Later on (when my grandmother was about 9), they travelled by bullock dray from Echuca to start a new life in northern NSW. Apparently William and Elizabeth (?) (nee Ramsay) - my G-Grandparents - separated or divorced after moving to northern NSW, and she and most of my grandmother's siblings went back to New Zealand, to her family there. I don't even know who these siblings were, but there were some - notably a brother (Robert) who apparently lived at Mallanganee in northern NSW. I seem to recall some mention that William Wells lived with him for some time.
I don't know whether William lived with my grandparents at any stage (I think he did - early in their marriage, at North Creek), but I understand that eventually he, too, went back to NZ, and died in Timaru - which is near the afore-mentioned Gapes Valley.
Susan Eleanor married my grandfather Dugald Brown and they farmed at North
Creek and Uralba (rural districts around Ballina), until finally retiring to
Ballina. My father's eldest brother was named William (obviously after his
grandfather), but he died of polio aged about 11 early in the 1900's and is
buried in the Pioneer Cemetery at East Ballina. His headstone there carries a
memorial notice to his grandfather, William, as well. (We used to always
wonder why William Wells didn't have a grave of his own there). I think they
were all still pretty close, because the whole of my father's family visited
rellies in NZ around 1913 or so, when my father was about 3 yrs old. There is
a family photo floating around somewhere of a HUGE tribe of people posing -
maybe William Wells could be one of them. Unless they went over for his
funeral. As late as the late 1940's/ early 50's, my cousin Geoff Gray (Aunty
Ella's son - Susan Eleanor's grandson) spent a holiday with that part of the
family on their farm in in New Zealand.

We are interested in any links between the Licolnshire Welles and Alexander de Welles, Master/Prior of Torphichen and the Knights Hospitaller of the Order of St John of Jerusalem in Scotland. Alexander de Welles died in 1298 at the Battle of Falkirk where he fought with Adam de Welle(s) of Lincolnshire and Philip de Welle(s) (probably of Essex) against William Wallace.
Alisaundre de Welles, Preceptor of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem A lion rampant, defaced (RR783(SHS64410, SAS2857). The seal probably has a crusilly background, to differentiate Alexander from the head of his house. The tail is normally double-queued for Welles but cannot be ascertained from the seal. Bruce McAndrew, Proc.Soc.Antiq.Scot, 129 (1999), 663-752.
The lion rampant on the seal of Friar Alisaundre de Welles almost certainly brings him within the ambit of the English family of that name which bore Or, a lion rampant queue four chy sable. Bruce A. McAndrew, Scotlands Historic Heraldry 2006, Boydell and Brewer Ltd.
