Hackney Mourns The Death of a Pioneer Mother
Mrs. Agnes Holtby, 87, widow
of Hilary Holtby, and one
of the oldest pioneer woman of this section,
having come
to Cowley County in 1876, died at her home 8 miles north
of
Arkansas City at 6:30 oclock, Sunday Evening. She
had been n falling health
for some time.
Grandma Holtby, as she was known to her many friends in
the Hackney
neighbourhood, where she and her husband
settled after living one year on
the present site of
Arkansas City, had been a member of the Hackney Brothren
Church for many years. She came here from Canada, her
native country. At
that time, which was almost 59 years
ago, she and Mr Holtby travelled her
from Emporia in a
covered wagon. They brought all thier personal goods and
belongings with them in the wagon. J. L. Bowen, still a
resident of the
city, drove the team, one of the sons of
Mrs. Holtby said today. The
homestead place eight miles
directly north of this city on the main road has
been
her home all these years. Thew east edge of the farm
adjourns
Hackney. The husband died there 26 years ago.
Mr. & Mrs. Holtby are said to have lived in a log cabin
at C street
and Central , at which was
the locstion the townsite company gave the for a lot,
for one year.
Mrs. Holtby is survived by three sons, three daughters,
32 grandchildren,
14 great granchildren. The surviving
children are, William, of Arkansas
City, C. R. and R. B.
of Winfield, Mrs. Nellie Markham, Mrs. W. H. Boswell
and
MRs. H. H. Kirkpatrick, all of this city.
Funeral services are to be held at 2 oclock Wednesday
afternoon in the
United Brethren Church, south of
Hackney. The Reverend W. S. Luner, Pastor,
will
officiate. Burial will be in the Hackney Cemetery where
the husband
is buried. The Grant Funeral home is in
charge.

John Nelson Wells
Birth Date: January 4, 1870
Birth Place: Mariposa, Twsp
Death Date: December 1, 1958
Death Place: Tisdale, Sask
Burial Place: Abernethy, Cemetery
Notes:
Married 3 cousin and went to Abernathy Sask
Jack and Lucy Wells were married at Port
Parry, Ontario. They lived north of Lindsay and had a family of 5 by 1905 when
Jack left for the west on a harvest excursion. While in the west he used his
carpenter skills and helped build the Conrad Stueck house, the Robbins house,
and the Knox Presbyterian Church. Before returning east he bought John Tim's
homstead north of town, complete with a sod-roofed log house.
The family came in March of 1906. It was a
week before their furniture and settlers effects came so they stayed in room at
C.H. Anderson's. The boys slept in a clothes closet, the girls on the floor of
the bedroom.
They moved into their log hut. It was one
room with two log bunks on one end for beds. The roof would drip for two days
after it had quit raining.
They fought prairie fires that first spring
to protect their farm. During the summer Jack built an eight room frame house
and they moved in before winter.
Later jack bought an International tractor
and broke land for several newcomers. He bought a half section of new prairie
further north near the reserve. He broke the land , built a house and stables
and then moved there after selling his first farm to the Donnellys. ( 13 feb
1996- Conversation with Chester Kinghorn. The man that Uncle Jack bought the
tractor from was from Glenarm and they new one another before they moved)
The children went to Foster School. It was
a small school built of stone. It was also very warm inthe winter because it was
heated with a large stove which kept students or the teacher busy firing it up.
They went to the school on Sunday for the church service and a minister from
Balcarres usually served, but he could not always be there so one of the farmers
could preach. hey usually asked Sam Barnsly, John Teece Sr. or Mr. Balfour.
Politics had enterd the sermon on one occasion and the one gentleman oif the day
was never asked to preach again.
Jack built a house in Abernethy where he
and Lucy spent their last days.

W.E. Arksey was born in Ops Township, Ontario, on June 2 1875, died March 30 1942. Hannah Jane Wells was born in Mariposa Township, Ontario on November 5 1875 and died marvh 18, 1959. Married William Arksey Dec 26, 1900.
They had four children. The family lived in Lindsay and Toronto before coming to Abernethy in 1919. Mother was a sister to John Wells who farmed a few miles from the village. A brother and a sister had visited Abernethy and perhaps influenced their decision to come.
The family all attended the Methodist and Presbyterian Church and later the United Church. Mother and Dad were both involved with the church. Dad was a member of the Masonc Lodge. They both curled and we all skated.
Our first home in Abernethy was south of the railway tracks.
Our next home was on the west side of main street next to Dad's blacksmith shop.
They left Abernethy and went to Edmonton
